Athletes of the Meet - 2008

Westminster

Pictures to come

Sadie Schureck— as the meet was beginning she was recruited at the last minute (or second?) to replace a sick teammate on the 200 MR. She didn’t have time to prepare mentally or physically for the racebut she still performed impressively. She actually ended up dropping 1.4 seconds off of her previous best 50 back split. She didn’t stress out or seem annoyed at the last minute recruit-ment. Instead she responded exactly how a senior leader should—with calm, grace and a quick pace to the starting block.

Pictures to come

Kelsey Gouge—swam her best 100 Fly time as well having the fastest split in the 200 FR. She also dropped a little time in her 50 free which was impressive in itself. It was more impressive in the fact that she commented after the race that it could have been a little bit better if she had done ‘this’ better or done ‘that’ a little better. Being able to recognize areas that could use improvement is the first step to getting better. I am fairly confident that with this positive attitude she will undoubtedly be making great improvements as the season progresses.

Pictures to come

Thomas Nguyen— dropped nearly 3 seconds in his 200IM to get his State qualifying time. Also had an impressive 100 back time where he dropped nearly a second to improve the State qualifying time he earned last week. The team really needs for him to step up and have a break out season this year. He’s off to a good start so far!

Pictures to come

Mark Dunn—dropped over 2 seconds in his 200 Free time as well as dropping time in his 100 Fly. He also had the fastest split on the 400 FR. Seems determined to drop a little bit each week. Not sure it will continue throughout entire sea-son—but a little bit here and a little bit there sure adds up in the long run
Norcross
Anna Springer—won both of her individual events with impressive times. Her Breast time was a 2.4 second improvement over last week and is currently the second fastest time in the State. Her 50 Free time is currently 6th fastest in the State. Good start to what is going to be a great season
Alma Lopez—times in both of her events were better than her best from the 07/08 season. Her Fly time was nearly a second and a half improve-ment while her IM time was over a half second improvement. Can’t wait to see what they will be at the end of the season.
Danny Nguyen—of the 3 events won by Brookwood he won two of them—200 IM and 100 Fly. His times in both events are currently the fasted posted in the State. Not a bad start to the season!

No picture - Dylan

(Sorry)

Dylan Herzog—dropped 3 seconds in his 200 IM and nearly 2 seconds in his 100 back. The 100 back time was good enough to earn him his first ever State qualifying time.
Duluth / Shilo
Cassy Wilhelm— had lots of impressive swims—compared to last season’s best times she dropped over 4 seconds in her 500 Free, almost a second in her 100 back, and her 100 free leadoff on the relay was almost a half second improvement. Both of the individual events were good State qualifying times that I’m sure will only get better as the season progresses
Jana Mangimelli— times for both of her individual events were All-American consideration times. Her 100 fly time was nearly a 3 second improvement on her best time last season. Her 200 Free time was the fastest of the meet (even bettering the boys). Her 400FR anchor split of 53.18 was only beaten by one male at the meet. Pretty impressive for events that aren’t really her ‘best’ ones.
Brandon Clay— improved on his impressive 2008 State performance in the 200 IM to drop .2 more seconds. I was told at the beginning of the season that his breaststroke was a lot better but I didn’t expect quite the impressive drop in time. He dropped over 6 seconds off of his best time from last season. Can’t wait to see what he has for us at the end of the season!
Pierce Hardy— attending practice on a regular basis and working hard at those practices has paid off. From his best times last year he dropped over 2 seconds in his 50 free and over 3 seconds in his 100 Breast. His 100 Breast time was .25 from a State Qualifying time. With another 50-60 practices left in the season there’s no telling how much his times will have improved by then
